Household Waste Recycling Centres

Kier manages around 50 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) across England, including 18 in Norfolk and 18 in North Yorkshire.

Our HWRCs collect a vast range of materials; paper, wood, rubble, TVs, fridges – even shoes and engine oil. The key to recycling success lies in making the recycling of multiple materials as simple as possible for the customer, and we feel strongly that our HWRCs should become part of the communities they serve.

Our site staff are trained recycling advisers, whose duty it is to greet members of the public, and provide customers with information and assistance to help them correctly sort their waste into the appropriate bank. This not only ensures low levels of contamination, but also diverts waste away from disposal in landfill. This advisory approach is underpinned by a customer-centred service culture that gives the public a more positive impression when visiting any of our recycling centres.

We use compactors on site, which increases the volume of waste that can be accepted at HWRCs. This means that we generate far fewer vehicle movements for collection of the same tonnage of materials, minimising our impact on the local environment and reducing our carbon footprint.
