A ground breaking ceremony to mark the official start of construction work on site for the new £40m Bexhill High School took place on 3 December.
The ceremony marks a huge milestone in the development of the new school and Skill Centre, which is being built by Longley under the Building Schools for the Future programme.
Pupils from the school who have been involved in every step of the planning process got to play a hands-on role at the ceremony. Armed with spades and dressed in hard hats and hi-vis jackets, the pupils were joined by county council officials, representatives from the community and members of the Longley site team as they dug out the first pieces of turf.
After the ceremony, school principal Mike Conn commented: "I am just ecstatic it has finally happened. After all the planning, the debates and consultation it's finally here and we are off. "It was important that the children carried out the ground breaking because it is their project and they will be sending their children to the new school."
The new school will not feature traditional classrooms and long corridors but instead will have a number of learning zones arranged around a large, central open space. This design supports a range of teaching and learning approaches. The building will also include several sustainable technologies to help substantially reduce its carbon footprint.
It is hoped that construction work will be completed by autumn 2010.
