Kier Construction Ltd was selected to construct a new 1,300MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station at West Burton, Nottinghamshire. The site is adjacent to the River Trent and the existing coal fired power station.
The main civil element of the contract consists of the infrastructure for three combined cycle units operating with natural gas. There is also a design and build element to include the pumping station, administration building, gatehouse building and workshop/warehouse buildings. Kier will use their in-house design capability to fulfil this part of the works.
CCGT power generation is the most energy efficient and clean method of fossil fuel generation. CCGT plant burn natural gas, which turns a gas turbine with the waste heat used to turn a steam turbine.
The power station will be ready for commercial use in 2011, with an expected life of 25-30 years. Once completed the CCGT will generate enough power to supply the needs of around 1.5 million homes and will employ more than 40 skilled operators.
