Stunning new church for Cambourne reaches high point
23/07/2009
The town of Cambourne celebrated a milestone in the construction of its new church this month. Kier Marriott has reached the highest point of the outstanding £1.1m building, commissioned by client Shared Churches (Ely) Ltd.
Reverend Dr Geoff Cook, and church warden and project co-ordinator Ian Jarvis, led a traditional topping out ceremony attended by over 50 people including fundraisers, local residents, members of the project team and representatives from a number of different churches. After being presented with a special ceremonial trowel by Kier Marriott contracts director Sean Yeo, Reverend Cook ventured up to the top of the building and placed a special prayer card on the highest point, commenting: “Kier Marriott should be very proud of all it has achieved on this project.”
The striking building has attracted compliments from the whole community. Cambourne resident and churchgoer Jules Hannaford said: “This building is lovely, a great inspiration with real presence. It reflects a traditional church in a very modern way. Children from the schools in each of the three villages that make up Cambourne are working to create a wall hanging to display in here – the church is really pulling everyone in the community together. We will fill it with praise!”
United Reform Church property officer Gordon Heald commented: “There is a perception among the public that the Christian church in the UK is shrinking but that’s not the case; there are a number of new churches currently under construction, as well as many extensions and refurbishments. Cambourne Church will unite and represent different denominations and be central to the whole village, as well as the Christian community.”
Kier Marriott contracts director Sean Yeo added: “I would like to thank our client Shared Churches (Ely) Ltd for giving us the opportunity to work on this stunning project, which really has the wow factor. We are delighted to have reached this important milestone in the build and are looking forward to its successful conclusion in October.”
