Workers dive in to start on Bristol's new Olympic-size pool

Kier Western has started work on a new £27m leisure centre at Hengrove Park, and a ceremonial turf cutting marked the beginning of the end of the long campaign to get a new swimming pool in south Bristol.
But before the spades went in, Bristol Central Swimming Club's synchronised swimmers gave a ‘dry’ demonstration of the technical routine that won them gold in the British Championships earlier this year.
Councillors Jos Clark and Sylvia Doubell, who represent Hengrove, and Helen Holland, the former council leader who represents Whitchurch Park, were asked to cut the turf. Ms Holland commented: “This will be a fantastic swimming facility, a flagship pool to replace some of our aged pools.”
As well as the Olympic-size 50-metre pool, Hengrove Park will boast a learner pool, health & fitness suite and a free weights area, three aerobics studios, a four-court sports hall, cafe, creche and community meeting rooms.
Kier Western operations director Martyn Osborne said: “This will be an iconic building that people will come from miles around to see. This is a huge opportunity for us to show the local community what we can do.”
The centre is expected to employ more than 150 staff and is part of the multi- million pound regeneration of Hengrove Park, which includes the recently completed skills academy and a community hospital. The project is being built through a private finance initiative agreement, which was signed in April. The financial backer is the National Australia Bank Limited. It was designed by swimming pool specialists LA-Architects and, on completion in spring 2012, will be run by Parkwood Leisure, which operates 82 leisure centres across the UK.
