GSCE art students at Bexhill High School in east Sussex have been showcasing their artwork to the public on a mural displayed on the site hoardings, against the backdrop of their new school building.
Kier Longley joined forces with Bexhill High School’s art department to display 30 pieces of artwork created by over 100 students who had studying GCSE art & design, including a group of year 10 students who had completed the course in one year. The work, which was based on the four themes of still life, portrait, pattern and barriers, was produced using a variety of different skills including painting, sculpture and printmaking. The mural consists of 30 panels of eight foot by four foot plywood, onto which the students have produced their personal interpretation of the themes.
A number of the Kier site team at Bexhill and their subcontractors were involved in making the mural a reality; they worked closely with the school’s skills centre, donated materials for the artwork and on the day carefully moved the finished piece to the display area at the site where they also installed it.
Bexhill High School art teacher Miranda Pennington expressed her thanks to the Kier team in an email, commenting: “I just wanted to say thank you again for all the hard work involved putting up the murals. It looks sensational!”
The school hosted an open day last Friday when the artwork was erected, serving up delicious cream teas for everyone involved in the project and visitors who had come along to see the artwork. The mural was displayed for all to see over the weekend.
