Kier Islington team gets back in the saddle for charity
29/07/2010
Four colleagues from Kier Islington have completed an impressive 360-mile bike ride and are expected to have raised around £3,000 for charity.
The money will be divided between local Islington-based charity Welfare for the Blind, Marie Curie and When You Wish upon a Star, which arranges special experiences for children with life-threatening illnesses.
The four companions, joined by their friend Ian Francis, cycled from Hamburg to Amsterdam in a six-day journey along the coast. The group overcame accidents, transportation problems and a slight wrong turn - ending up on the motorway - to complete their journey!
Participants Andy Butcher, Bob Haddock, Alvin Martini and Andy Jeffreys all work in the repairs and maintenance section of Kier Islington. This is the second time some of the group have cycled for charity; the first was from London to Amsterdam in 2008 to raise funds for treatment for colleague Gary Russell, who sadly lost his battle with cancer in 2009.
“We wanted to do another charity cycle ride to raise money and also to commemorate Gary. We were overwhelmed with the support we received from friends, family, co-workers and subcontractors. I’d like to give a big thank to everyone for their donations,” said Andy Jeffreys, project manager at Kier Islington.
“It was a great trip, very hard work but rewarding. The first couple of days were the toughest but we soon got into the swing of it and the beautiful scenery helped take our minds off the miles we had to cover!”
Kier Islington is an award-winning joint venture partnership between Islington Council and Kier. It is responsible for the joint delivery of the Decent Homes programme for Homes for Islington, the council’s arm’s length management organisation, in addition to the planned and responsive repairs and maintenance of over approximately 22,000 council properties. Kier Islington has been working in the area for ten years.
