The Welsh Government are focusing on the range and quality of engagement partnerships between educational sectors - particularly secondary school and employers. Areas covered include impartial advice and guidance, work related experience and entrepreneurial activities. Careers Wales are leading the facilitation of the activities.
Within Kier’s Regional Building business, we have three Welsh offices delivering building projects throughout Wales. Through these workplaces, we are invested creating wider value for the people and community from everything we do.
A range of initiatives have been implemented by the Regional Building business. Supported by Careers Wales, in 2018 we joined the Business in the Community’s ‘Business Class’ programme, partnered with West Monmouth School, one of the largest schools in Wales. The following year we did the same at Rhyl High School, allowing us to support young people in the north and south of the country.
Through this relationship we have delivered many activities including 'World of Work Day' where 60 Year 9 students completed 5 different construction activities. Further to this, we have delivered a 'Making a Difference Day'. This provided students with a taste of working in construction by working together to transform their old school science lab into a new break and eating area, to support an increase in pupil numbers at Monmouth School.
At Prestatyn High School we have delivered digital experience on Building Information Modelling (BIM) at assembly and supported the new students into the school with their “Transition Day” for year 7 pupils.
Through our education and community activities since July 2018, we have generated over £137m in social value return. This is the equivalent of 67p for every pound spent. Within the last 12 months in North Wales alone working with Career Wales and through our site teams we have supported over 25 school events to over 2300 pupils ranging from primary to university students.
Our Regional Building Western and Wales and North West businesses have been nominated by Career Wales in their '2019 Valued Partner Awards' in recognition for the work they do in partnership with Career Wales.
