As part of its planned maintenance contract for Clarion Housing, Kier is responsible for maintaining 20,000 properties including those within the Roman Road estate.
The Roman Road Adventure Playground provides free play facilities and community buildings to children aged 6-15 and is a much-loved local resource. Although the park receives housing association funding, it also relies on help and support from local people and businesses to ensure it can continue to provide free activities and services.
Through contract-led community engagement work, Kier looks to bring about improvements that benefit local residents by engaging with key stakeholders, to ensure it is offering social value activities that are at the heart of the communities it operates in. The adventure playground is not only used as a play area but also plays hosts to events, workshops and classes that help to instil a sense of community cohesion.
Kier undertook the project to make improvements to the Roman Road Adventure playground buildings and garden to make them more user friendly for residents. The facility includes several indoor areas that are used for classes and workshops and the Kier team volunteered their skills and time to fully decorated the hall space, communal lounge, kitchen area and toilets - which are all vital when providing community-based services.
These works included the replacement of all kitchen unit fronts and a general refresh, making the space clean and bright and making it more appealing for people to use. The team installed four new planters in the communal garden, promoting outdoor play and helping children develop an understanding of the role nature plays in an urban environment.
By investing in this community facility, Kier has contributed to making the Roman Road estate a more attractive and vibrant places to live.
Initiatives such as this help the contract team form a closer connection with the neighbourhoods they are servicing and also provide invaluable team building exercises.
" All the Staff and Children at Roman Road Adventure Playground would like to say a big thank you to the guys at Kier for carrying out the decoration of the adventure playground building. Everyone that has come to the playground since has noticed the difference and we have had many compliments on the work. "Lead Youth Worker Clarion Futures
