An ambitious target for social value
Part of our approach to ‘People and Communities’ is looking to create a positive social impact and at Kier, we are committed to delivering industry - leading social impact that positively contributes to meeting the needs of the communities and contracts we serve. To focus our approach, we established a social impact strategy – Shaping our Communities. This strategy defines and directs our opportunity to have a positive role in the communities in which we operate, which will in turn support our clients in the delivery of their ambitions and targets, and enable our workforce to truly represent and engage with the communities where they live and work.
We have a target to achieve 10% additional social impact equivalent to revenue by 2020. In order to achieve this, we have seen significant advances in our capture and recording of activity.
Reporting, transparency and benchmarks
As part of our commitment we have signed up to a number of industry recognised internal and external benchmarks which allows us to communicate relevant, clear, balanced and accurate information.
The FTSE4Good Index is a series of ethical investment stock market indices. Kier, as a constituent of the FTSE group of companies, is assessed against the qualifying criteria each year, and we have seen our performance improve year on year.
Business in the Community (BITC) has undertaken an annual independent assessment since 2015, and Kier’s Corporate Responsibility (CR) Leadership Group invites expert external opinion at its quarterly meetings.
Kier has also developed a social impact calculator to coordinate, capture and record social impact effectively and uniformly across all contracts and project.

Partnering Surrey County Council with an innovative scheme that brings vulnerable people in social care into the workplace, supporting these candidates to be able to carry out basic highway works in the community and helping tackle the national social care time bomb.
At the 2017 awards Kier was shortlisted in seven of the nine BIG categories and won three awards. These included Pollinator, Maintenance and Management and BIG Biodiversity Champion.
At Kier we are committed to finding innovative solutions to minimise our environmental impact. Since March 2017 there have been over 150 company car orders for electric vehicles. 23% of orders are now for electric or hybrid vehicles.
Clarion-managed Roman Road Adventure Playground was the first adventure playground to be built by a housing association in England and provides a free, safe space for local children to play in an urban environment.
