Following the outbreak of COVID-19, we have continued to maintain the UK’s highways networks, deliver vital maintenance to peoples’ homes, provide FM services to the NHS, build schools and hospitals, deliver critical national infrastructure and provide key services to the water, gas, power, telecoms and rail sectors.
It is more important than ever that we help and support communities at this time.
Simply, it is the right thing to do.
Working together safely
The health, safety and wellbeing of our people is our number one priority and we have adapted our procedures to ensure all works are carried out safely. We have, and continue, to review all of our sites to ensure that we are operating in a way that complies with the Construction Leadership Council’s site operating procedures and in line with Public Health England’s guidance.
From infrastructure projects including HS2, to construction projects and utility services across the country, we have implemented new ways of working that keep our colleagues, clients and customers safe. Our Kier Living sites are also now open and safely ready for business.
Establishing new ways of working
Leaving lasting legacies in areas in which we build is important to all that we do and COVID-19 has made us think and do some things differently. We continue to keep clients, our supply chain and the residents living in the communities we work in informed of what we are doing. As a result, we have developed a number of new ways of working. Using various virtual platforms, we have been able to conduct site tours for clients to see project progress, host meet the buyer events for our supply chain partners and hold topping out ceremonies that local communities are able to watch from their homes
Now, more than ever, we want to make sure communities know what is happening around them.
Helping the NHS
In response to COVID-19, the NHS has needed support and we have been there. We are proud to have been involved in three surge hospitals; NHS Louisa Jordan in Scotland, NHS Nightingale Bristol and Bay Field Hospital in Swansea.
We have also supported the NHS and its front-line workers in other ways, including bolstering its broadband at a call centre in Sussex to cope with more calls and emails. Our teams have also been diligently providing FM services for 16 hospitals.
Often you don’t see us – be it that we are working in the middle of the night or in remote places – but our teams are working tirelessly to keep homes connected at this time. Here, are just a few facts that show what we have been doing to keep homes running…
- Connected 5,000 residents to broadband for one of our clients
- Prevented the loss of water to 20,000 homes by repairing a leak on a water network
- On call to provide emergency repairs to over 25,000 homes
- Collected waste from 140,000 households
We have also wanted to do more, to share, help and support communities, where possible. Our Birmingham Highways contract has donated over 40,000 disposable gloves to Birmingham City Council, our Specialist Services team created a temporary shelter for the homeless and our utilities team in Lowestoft has been helping elderly and local residents have one hot meal a day.
Supporting our teams
At this time, we have been doing all that we can to support colleagues across the business. We are communicating with our teams frequently and providing help and support where it is needed. Our colleagues allow us to deliver for communities every single day so we understand that it is vital that we look after them.
