Lea Perrozzi is a trainee SHE advisor working for Kier Specialist Services. Lea joined Kier in 2015 and in this blog she speaks about the skills and confidence her apprenticeship gave her, and how her career has progressed since completing her apprenticeship.

“I joined Kier as a business administrator apprentice in 2015, which was my first job out of school. By the time I was 17, I was responsible for coordinating the learning needs of over 300 employees in the Kier Housing Maintenance East business and won Rising Star at the Kier Annual Awards 2017, which made me incredibly proud and determined to build my career at Kier.

After completing my NVQ level 2 and 3 in business, I was keen to explore more of the Group and find out more about our projects.

I’d been working with the health and safety team in Housing Maintenance and was (and am) passionate about making sure our people get home safely at the end of every shift. I got a real sense of achievement when I’d helped join the dots and make sure everything on-site was compliant with Kier rules and UK regulations, and decided that I wanted to be an advisor.

My colleagues at Kier have been so helpful over the years; as soon as I finished my apprenticeship, I became the personal assistant to the head of health and safety for Housing Maintenance and now I’m a trainee SHE advisor, which was my dream role when I was an apprentice.

When I left school, I knew I wanted to work for a large company as there would be plenty of opportunities to progress my career. My apprenticeship has given me all the relevant qualifications and confidence, while working for Kier has helped me develop my industry knowledge and taught me the skills I needed to get to where I am now.

I loved the hands-on approach of an apprenticeship and enjoyed working in different roles; it gave me time to decide what I wanted to do for a career. It’s honestly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!”
