Melissa Day is a HR business partner working in Kier Regional Building North & Scotland. Here, she talks about her career since joining Kier in 2009 and her experience of working in the construction industry.

“I am HR Business Partner for the Regional Building North and Scotland region. My role involves supporting the leaders in shaping and delivering the people plan in support of the business strategy as well as supporting our employees with any people issues on a day to day basis. No day is ever the same!

I worked for Kier since finishing sixth form in 2009. Knowing university wasn’t for me, I started in an Admin role in what is now Kier Infrastructure and after 12 months I stepped into the world of HR.

During my time with Kier I have worked across three business units; Infrastructure, Highways and now Construction. I have been lucky enough to be involved in some incredible projects, all of which have provided me with great experience to support my career progression through to my current role as HR business partner. Working across the different business units has allowed me to also meet so many people and build great relationships with colleagues at all levels of the organisation.

I feel extremely proud to work in the construction industry, particularly knowing the positive impacts we make on the communities we work in. It’s not all about hi-vis jackets, boots and hard hats, the industry has provided and continues to provide so many great development opportunities for both females and males across all different types of career paths.

Working in HR has been particularly challenging in the last 12 months and it has helped me to learn that although some things may be daunting, when I put my mind to it, I am able to rise to a challenge and conquer a lot. It has also taught me the importance of people skills and building strong relationships – whether it’s virtually or face-to-face.

Kier and the whole construction industry is full of incredibly hardworking, talented people, who are extremely resilient to whatever challenges are thrown at them. There are so many great role models and you can learn so much from so many and it is important to mention, Kier is not only a construction company, but a great environment to progress your career!”
