HMT Sancta Maria is a privately-run hospital in Swansea. Outgrowing its current location, we are currently delivering a brand-new building nestled in the SA1 quarter. Here, senior site manager Darren Rees explains his passion for the project and how it’s set to bring far-reaching benefits for patients.

“HMT Sancta Maria is a fantastic hospital that is committed to delivering first-class care for its patients. It is a private hospital, owned by registered charity, Healthcare Management Trust, and it has been in operation since the 1950s on Ffynone Road in Swansea.

Over the years it has been upgraded and refurbished but due to growing demand the space is no longer sufficient and not in line with HMT’s aim to provide the best patient experience possible.

That’s where we come in.

In January 2019, we were appointed by the Trust to deliver a new hospital in SA1, between Fabian Way and Landgon Road. It will be a purpose-built building delivering state-of-the-art facilities to meet the evolving needs of the Trust.

The development offers a breadth of facilities, including two operating theatres, MRI, endoscopy and x-ray units as well as 12 en-suite bedrooms. There will be new diagnostic equipment, including an MRI scanner and purpose-built consulting and ward rooms. In addition, there will be a café and on-site parking.

We are progressing well with the building, in February we held a topping out ceremony as we completed the main structure. Our focus now turns to the internal fit out as we draw closer to completion later this year.

In order to deliver this new hospital, we have worked with our local supply chain. Currently, 75% of our skilled teams are based within a 50-mile radius of the development. Our new office is only 0.5 miles away, as we are committed to our presence in the city.

We also have two bricklaying apprentices, one mechanical apprentice and one electrical apprentice on site, as well as a management trainee and a trainee quantity surveyor who are both undertaking the Kier Foundation Degree and provided work placements as we look to inspire the next generation of talent to join our industry.

In addition, this site has become a live learning environment for students just down the road at Swansea University, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Gower College and local schools.

The involvement of the local residents has been fundamental to this project as we are committed to engaging with communities in which we build.

I am extremely proud to be a part of the team delivering the new facilities for HMT Sancta Maria, it is a hospital that will benefit the local community for years to come.”
