Cornwall Council will part-fund and deliver the project in conjunction with the Highways Agency. Work will begin in March 2015 and is expected to take 22 months, with the new road open to the public in early 2017.

The scheme will dual the last section of single carriageway on the A30 between the M5 at Exeter and the Carland Cross junction with the A39 north of Truro (approx.4.5km). The improvements have been designed to ease congestion, increase the reliability of journeys and make it easier to travel across this busy part of the region.

The project is an additional investment, over and above the 84 schemes highlighted in the government’s recent £15bn Autumn Statement announcement, which will see substantial capital funding used to overhaul the UK road network.

Kier is well placed to support the delivery of that investment, having secured a place on the Highways Agency Collaborative Development Framework (CDF) in November 2014.

Council leader John Pollard said: “Local residents, businesses and holidaymakers have long highlighted the impact of traffic congestion and poor journey times along the 5 km section of the A30 between Temple and Higher Carblake,” he said, “This decision by the Government is another major step in delivering this much-needed scheme and I would like to thank everyone who has worked with the Council to achieve this.

“The dualling of this 5km stretch of road will play a vital role in reducing delays on the A30, which currently cost over £10m a year in lost time alone. It will also play an important role in the future prosperity of Cornwall by encouraging economic growth, aiding regeneration and business expansion and supporting tourism.”
