Built in 1863, Chelsea Rail Bridge is a Grade II listed bridge and carries the West London Line over the River Thames. The main objective was to strengthen the bridge increasing the load capacity to over 25 tonnes with an increase in line speed to 50mph.
The works included:
- Repairing the elements on the bridge which were corroded.
- Replacing the missing rivets.
- Re-paint the entire structure with a protective coating system.
- Protecting the existing cables located in the six feet and under the cess walkways.
Working with our specialist in-house Building Information Modelling (BIM) business, Clearbox, we developed a BIM process specifically for this project.We tracked the number of bolts installed and where repairs were required, carrying these out to follow regulations. The model also showed where additional bolts were needed to meet the design.
We also applied BIM to create a defect surveying system. This streamlined the monitoring of defects and associated repairs, and recorded all the details of the works in one place.
In collaboration with our partners, we successfully repaired, strengthened and repainted an iconic bridge in the centre of London. As a result, Network Rail has a safer, stronger, more efficient and reliable bridge.
The Luton DART project is a joint venture project between VolkerFitzpatrick and Kier (VFK). This new state-of-the-art guided mass passenger transit system will link the airport terminal building to Luton Airport Parkway station. Due to open in 2021 it will reduce journey time from the terminal to central London to under 30 minutes.
