The Challenge:

The design and construction work comprised:

  • 1328m of new embankment on a set-back alignment
  • Raising of 2,356m of existing embankment crests
  • Creation of 7 Ha of compensatory intertidal habitat.
  • Improvements to Sampsons and Mill Leaze Sluice
  • Identification of borrow areas to provide suitable fill material for construction of the new embankments
  • Devise and install suitable mitigation measures for protected species

The Solution:

Our Team’s Achievements

Design and Build: Matt Phillips and the team worked extremely closely with the design team to ensure buildable cost-effective designs.

Collaborative Working: Matt Phillips acted as a single point of contact to complete the scheme. Tony Bracey managed the earthworks throughout construction working collaboratively with our key strategic suppliers.

Minimal Disruption: Our design and build approach ensured disruption to the local public was minimised by minimising the use of the local road network. Our design included provision for all the borrow pits to source material directly from the working area.

Programme: TVO managed key constraints using our Total Programme Management approach. Our programme was fully resourced and directly linked to our cost forecast tool for accurate timely financial reporting. The team liaised with Natural England to meet their requirements for minimising disruption to over wintering birds. The scheme was delivered on time and on budget.

The Impact:

Our Team’s Achievements

Safe: Our team set up people free working areas using GPS equipped plant. This ensured that we were able to effectively manage people/plant interfaces. They also had to manage a cycle route through our works and maintain access for the local farmers working the land within our site. This included inducting farmers and EA operatives to ensure they fully understood the procedures to enable access within our working area.

Environment: Mitigation measures were in place and regular checks for nesting birds and hares were completed in all areas prior to our entry. Cost effective Great Crested Newts mitigation was maintained throughout the works, preventing a costly translocation programme.

Stakeholder Management: Our team negotiated borrow pit locations with landowners. Throughout the scheme our team attended Parish Council meetings to discuss the scheme and display plans of our proposed works, and the public informed with monthly newsletters.
