Diana Princess of Wales Hospital Staff Accommodation
North Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust
< Back
The Challenge:
The new staff accommodation at Grimsby consists of 220 studio and one-bedroom apartments each with a bathroom pod, spread over two three- and four-storey blocks. Communal areas are found on every corridor with cooking facilities and a living area. A single-storey link connects both blocks.
As the site is on the live hospital grounds, the team have worked to prevent disruption to the hospital’s day to day activities; for example, sub-contractor parking has not been allowed on the hospital grounds to prevent taking up parking for hospital staff and visitors.

The Solution:
To ensure that the construction process was both time and cost-effective, offsite construction was utilised, in the form of both pre-fabricated bathroom pods and kitchens, which are easy to maintain and durable.
A lightweight Kingspan SFS steel frame was also used; this was simply lifted into place to form rooms and corridors.

The Impact:
The project was a resounding success, with high quality accommodation delivered four weeks early due to the forward-planning of the project team and the excellent relationships between Kier and the hospital Trust.
The new accommodation will help to retain staff and students, and aid in recruitment. The trust were extremely happy with their staff accommodation.
" Kier clearly understood our client brief from the outset and have worked in partnership with the Trust throughout this project. Both teams have worked very closely together, from design all the way through construction. Our staff, patients, visitors and local residents have received excellent communication, with regular progress report from the team. The Trust is absolutely delighted, how this project has been manged and delivered. "Jug Johal Director of Estates and Facilities North Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust
