The project included the design and build of a new watersports and leisure village in the heart of an existing holiday park, forming the hub for all leisure and sporting activity within the campus that attracts 2500 holidaymakers in 600 holiday lodges at peak times. Included in the scope was a new swimming pool, gymnasium, fitness studio, spa steam facilities, sauna and treatment rooms, food & beverage concession and a conference centre formed from a series of inter connecting buildings stepped into a sloping hillside.
Risks included the potential for groundwater ingress during construction. There were several specialist design requirements including the pool itself, flumes, pool water services, pool filtration and ventilation to prevent odours and condensation.
A collaborative approach was adopted from the beginning, with weekly meetings held with the Park Manager and Heads of Departments, along with regular tours for the staff.
A two week look ahead programme was developed to discuss the construction's impact on the operation of the holiday park, particularly around bank holidays and school holidays when the park was at its busiest. The building was constructed using a reinforced concrete frame up to level two from which the steel roof and wall sections were lifted, clad with hollow core planks, standing seam roof and non-flammable composite insulated wall panels.
The potential for groundwater ingress during construction was mitigated through a system of pumping chambers to lower the water table in the surrounding area to allow the construction operations to progress unhindered. After treatment and screening for silt, the water was discharged into the neighbouring brook with the approval of the Environment Agency.
The leisure centre was opened in February 2018 by gold Commonwealth and Olympic silver medallist Sharron Davies, creating an exciting facility for holidaymakers of all ages to enjoy.
