The NHS Blood and Transplant Centre at Barnsley will feature lab and office space, freezers and cold rooms, and warehousing space, alongside other ancillary areas.
Major departments will be based at the Centre, including Hospital Services, Red Cell Immunohaematology, Cellular and Molecular Therapies with five Class B clean rooms, and Histocompatibility and Genetics. The new Centre is a response to the reduced demand for blood, and will make better use of donations.
As the single, dedicated location for consolidated NHS BT services in the Yorkshire region, the building has been designed to reflect this, with durable elements to avoid replacement for approximately 20 years, and scope to expand the Centre in the future if necessary.
The fit-out works include the installation of internal walls, ceilings, floor finishes, and partitioning, among other works, and is designed to reflect the key aims of NHS BT; notably, that all elements should be easy to clean, and be both flexible and durable.
For example, all elements and finishes should be flush where possible to avoid creating dust traps, and easy access to services should be imperative, particularly above clean rooms. A deep plan void will be installed above the clean rooms to provide clear spans and full maintenance access.
The building is designed to be sustainable, with a BREEAM rating of Excellent and an EPC rating of A. A grey water reclamation system will be incorporated into the project.
The new centre will ensure the efficiency of NHS Blood and Transplant’s research and logistic activity in the Yorkshire region for the future, improving services for the NHS.
The project has also been highly beneficial to the local community; the site team have donated Easter eggs to the children’s ward of Barnsley Hospital, and have participated in assemblies, career fairs, and mock interview sessions with children at local primary and secondary schools. In its first Considerate Constructors visit in May 2019, the site scored 44 out of 50.

Our Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) iMRI project involved the construction of a three-storey building, adjacent to their existing theatres in the centre of their site, for a new iMRI suite and rehabilitation gym. The new MRI scanner was integrated into the new operating theatre to create a seamless brain imaging process during surgeries.
