The Challenge:
Prior to the project, the Firth Rixson ‘Aurora’ Hockey Pitch had fallen into disuse; the existing spectator stands and clubhouse were in disrepair, and the pitch was in extremely poor condition.
Procured through the Scape National Minor Works framework, the project consisted of the design and construction of a replacement hockey pitch and toilet block at the pitch, and the refurbishment of the stands.

The Solution:
The original hockey pitch was removed and replaced, with a new toilet block built on the site, working closely with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, Sport England, and England Hockey to ensure that the whole project met required specifications, such as for the artificial grass pitch.
The existing spectator stands were refurbished to provide pitch-side viewing. The former clubhouse, however, was no longer fit for purpose and could not be refurbished; this was demolished.

The Impact:
The new hockey pitch allowed Rotherham Hockey to move back to the pitch and use it as a home ground after four years away.
Despite the project being relatively short, the team still managed to get the local community involved. Some site visits took place, including a visit from the Rotherham Advertiser as well as Rotherham Hockey Club players near the completion of the project, who were able to play a short game on the new pitch.
" Great attitude throughout the Kier team, particularly with hitting key targets such as funding spend target "Brian Badger Senior Project Manager Sheffield Hallam University
