The UK is a global hub for science and technology innovation with universities, businesses, research and philanthropic organisations all playing a part in ground-breaking research and development. To maintain this international standing, it is essential that these organisations operate from facilities designed and constructed to support their specialist activities.
With two decades of experience in this field, Kier is one of very few operators able to deliver the complete range of services required to design, construct and refurbish these technically complex facilities. This includes cleanrooms, containment laboratories and facilities for materials, physics, chemistry and life sciences research.
We fully appreciate the impact of getting these facilities right which is why we place so much effort at the start of each project, to fully understand how the buildings will be used once commissioned.
Our approach is to engage early, often with the scientists who will actually use the facilities when complete. Together we look closely at process flows, energy consumption, ventilation and other key requirements such as cleanrooms, containment areas and, for example, EMI shielded/sensitive rooms. We also carefully consider the negative impact of factors such as vibration, particulates, temperature change, noise and humidity both during construction and once the buildings are commissioned. Our teams are used to working within environments subject to high levels of regulation and licencing.
