During the winter it can be challenging to deliver a successful winter maintenance programme while still delivering planned operations. Kier has a 100%, unblemished record when it comes to key performance indicators on winter maintenance for Transport for London on red routes and across the London Borough of Croydon.
Kier is keeping red routes open for Transport for London during the harshest weather. We are on standby 24/7 and 365 days of the year to mobilise our fleet of gritters across the capital. Often it is a case of forward thinking so that the right decisions are made early to pre-empt weather problems.
We have a meticulous approach to checking each driver is loaded with precisely the right tonnage and that vehicles are checked, fuelled and calibrated using the best technology available. In the most trying conditions we innovate, for example, using liquid tanks to use non-corrosive Pathway KA instead of grit to improve effectiveness.
Kier works closely with Croydon Council to agree the routes that need treating and the amount of grit spread during the winter, enabling roads to stay open in all but the most severe weather conditions. Our fleet of vehicles has been upgraded to improve efficiency and also incorporate the latest equipment to regulating the amount of grit used for different conditions.
We were put to the test during particularly harsh conditions earlier in 2018 with unprecedented snowfall, when we provided 24-hour gritting on main routes.
In February 2018, London was buried under vast quantities of snow, meaning that 28 treatments were carried out in one week using 1,200 tonnes of salt. Kier effectively dealth with multiple emergencies because of the cold such as removing icicles from tunnels. During the past six years, Kier has used over 12,000 tonnes of salt and treated over 95,000km of roads for Croydon Council.
" Many thanks to the tireless work put in by the Kier staff when dealing with snow events. The team puts in exceptional work to clear our routes of snow. "Croydon Council Network Maintenance Manager
