Recent years have seen significant investment in Thurrock and the south Essex area, including into Lakeside and DP World London Gateway Port and Logistics facility.
This is part of £20billion of planned investment in jobs, homes and infrastructure in Thurrock.
The A13 corridor is a vital part of the transport network, but is currently operating over capacity, with approximately 77,000 vehicles using this section of road every day.
Delivering this project will enable the continued growth of the economy, through expanding businesses, new housing and more jobs.
Government funding has been secured for the project and is directed through the South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP). The project is managed by Thurrock Council, and the council is supported by consultant AECOM. The designer is Atkins with Kier contracted to carry out the works.
The project includes:
- Widening the A13 from two to three lanes in both directions between Orsett and Stanford-le-Hope;
- Replacing four bridges over the A13 at Horndon Road, Saffron Gardens and Orsett Cock roundabout;
- Remodelling the Orsett Cock roundabout to increase capacity and install traffic signals to help manage vehicle flows more safely;
Preparatory works started in December 2017 with the main work starting in early 2019. The £79m project is planned to complete in autumn 2020.
Delivering this project will support economic growth across Thurrock and the south east, by enabling businesses to increase productivity, reduce costs and generate more employment.
In addition to reducing congestion and improving journey times, new LED street lighting will be installed, alongside new safety barriers and an improved road layout.
The impact on the community and environment will be managed by laying a new low-noise road surface, installing acoustic barriers, landscaping planting and improving drainage.
During the works, Kier has committed to creating employment, apprenticeships and work experience opportunities and will be engaging with local schools and colleges to inspire the next generation of construction industry professionals.
The project aims to boost the local economy by using local suppliers and subcontractors, with a focus on supporting small and medium enterprises.

The redevelopment of the Grade II listed block on London's Regent Street. Due for completion in Spring 2020, Morley House will house 44 luxury apartments. On the ground and basement levels will be 11,000 sq. ft of retail space.
Redevelopment of 25 & 37 Greenwood Place to provide a new 3,600m2 resource and community services centre run by people with disabilities, for people with disabilities. As part of Camden Council’s Community Investment Programme (CIP) it forms a hub for all services that was previously spread across the borough.
