Awarded by the Department of Education under the West Midlands Regional Framework, the scheme involved the construction of a new two-story teaching block to provide a dedicated study area for Maths and ICT, a new link building and the demolition of the existing 1950’s accommodation.
Adaptable to meet the requirements of a designated teaching school, the 10 new classrooms feature interactive screens and improved occupancy comfort through natural ventilation systems. Whilst the overriding factor for the renovation was to provide a much-improved learning environment, the construction of a new link building, which houses offices and reception areas, also provides a functional modernised front of house and enhanced hard and soft landscaped areas.
Bartholomew School is one of the top performing 20% non-selective schools in the UK and to minimise disruption to the 1,275 pupils, Kier utilised a tailored construction programme. We minimised impact on day-to-day operations by collaborating with the school during term time, ensuring the new teaching block was complete for the new academic year.
We made full use of school holidays for the Phase 2 demolition works and provided a bespoke independent sheeted scaffold solution to the existing building to contain construction debris. Our innovative programme, which negated the need to install temporary teaching accommodation, saved the client £130K.

The project was delivered within programme and budget and to the delight of the client, who consistently awarded the Kier team unbeatable 10/10 performance scores for budget, safety and customer management. The project also achieved a ‘Beyond Performance’ Certificate under the Considerate Constructors Scheme, receiving a score of 41/50 for contribution to the local community.
Our social value model was fully integrated and embraced by the project team, who implemented a bespoke engagement programme with the school which included:
- Seven-week educational course for Year 9 students which included BIM workshops, construction site visits and career talks.
- Whole school engagement delivered through a course of assemblies held for the 1275 pupils.
- ‘Shaping your world’ campaign promoted through onsite plaque and bespoke hoarding. To date, the bespoke Bartholomew ‘landing page’ has received over 700 hits.
- 86% of the project spend has been procured through SME’s located within 25 miles of the site.
