The Challenge:

Network Rail installed a new telecommunications network consisting of Fixed Telecommunications Network (FTN) and wireless Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway (GSM-R) technology. This provided a single national system for secure train driver to signaller communication and also a fibre network to support the digital railway.

We helped delivering the project through multiple re-appointments for 12 years covering installations in Southern, Western and Wales, LNE and LNW, our scope consisted of:

  • Survey and Design (Civils, Electrical, RF and Mechanical)
  • Civils enabling works and foundations
  • GSM-R steel tower erection
  • Relocatable Equipment Buildings (REBs)
  • Route work and fibre cable installation

The Solution:

To maximise the use of limited and short duration possessions we:

  • Blended in-house design and construction to safe and efficient construction solutions
  • Designed and installed inter-locking pre-cast concrete cabinet bases to minimise construction time on-site
  • Designed and installed steel pin or helical steel piling solutions for the communications masts superstructure

The Impact:

High level statistics:

  • 650 Node sites
  • 150 Tunnel Sites
  • 1.7 million metres of Routework surveyed and designed
  • 980,000 metres of Routework installed
  • 846 masts dismantled post-commissioning
  • Our ‘lookout for safety’ behaviours-based safety training resulted in more than 7 years accident free on our FTN/GSM-R contract, the best performance of any contractor.
