Dating back to 1921, the two block 64,500 sq ft office building still contained original desks and furniture that had to be cleared as part of the initial programme of works. It also adjoined a shopping centre and had an arcade on the Ground floor, both of which were occupied by a number of separate tenants throughout the work, so their health and safety needs together with the protection of the public throughout was a primary concern throughout.
In addition, access was via the basement, which had a shared pedestrian access route and the site was located in close proximity to a pedestrian route leading into the shopping centre and adjoining premises, which also required shared access.
Working in collaboration with the client, the buildings were quickly cleared and work carried out without any major impact on adjoining buildings and the day to day activities of this part of Cardiff. The result is a £17.5m luxury hotel and a Marco Pierre White Bar & Grill rooftop restaurant.
Work was also carried out to enhance the original Dominions Arcade beneath the hotel, which now includes the main access and foyer to the hotel reception and lounge, and a dedicated entrance and lift to the Marco Pierre White restaurant on the top floor.
