The Challenge:

The greatest challenge on this site was the extremely tight site location, adjacent to a new building being constructed by another contractor eight meters from the IMPACT building, and also live education facilities in close proximity, including the SMART building where very sensitive research is carried out.

Collaboration was key to achieving a quick start on site and harmonious relations thereafter including monthly meetings with key stakeholders to discuss programmes, logistics and resource.

The Solution:

The £35 million IMPACT research operation, part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government and Swansea University, was designed to allow for emerging research priorities and can adapt to industry needs informed by the latest scientific and technological developments.

The 6,500 m2, four-storey development has been built to BREEAM ‘excellent’ standards and comprises of two distinct areas; a large 1,600m2 open-plan laboratory space and a research office building with 80 single occupancy offices, hub space for up to 150 researchers, meeting rooms and research hubs that are linked by a light-filled atrium.

Externally, the north entrance features a large living wall of plants and flowers, approximately 114m2 square, promoting biodiversity, and providing year-round texture and colour.

The Impact:

Designed to BREEAM* excellent standards, IMPACT provides future proof highly specialised laboratories with a dynamic environment for collaboration of industry and academia. This unique operation aims to attract world leading expertise and significant research funding.

Throughout this project we engaged extensively with the Swansea community, through various events including hosting regular site visits for students at the university, utilising the site as a learning initiative for those who wish to work in the industry. During the construction of the IMPACT building we engaged with career and supply chain agencies within the area to provide training, local employment and work experience opportunities.

" The management of the preconstruction stage was the most efficient I have experienced to date. Professional and friendly approach with the right balance. Delivered in a timely manner with no broken promises or shocks. "
