Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames challenged us to remove a three-decade old bridge in 36 hours.
The removal of the bridge was critical to Kingston Station Go cycle scheme, clearing the way for a shared pedestrian and cycle bridge.
We had early contractor involvement, combining our expertise with supply chain partner, Topbond. A programme that covered hourly and ten-minute intervals allowed early risk resolution. We propped up the bridge before cutting and used three restraint beams to prevent the bridge hogging after cutting. Meeting with Network Rail generated a solution as we used a 350 tonne crane to prevent toppling risk and cut bridge falling. We reached an agreement to utilise a Network Rail possession to extend our working window.
Difficulties with the project began when drivers accessing the nearby shopping centre ignored Traffic Management. This caused a one-hour delay. We re-opened the bridge underpass to traffic and enforced a car park entrance closure. Further into the project a rail incident caused delays to spiral to three hours. Kier used detailed communications to ensure the client was kept accurately informed throughout the project.
Despite the setbacks encountered, we removed the bridge and re-opened 16 hours ahead of permit expiry.
During this project we encountered delays which were out of our control. We maintained a positive and professional outlook that delivered the project ahead of time.
