To cater for the 1,800 new homes planned for Grantham we designed the new Poplar Farm School; a 1.5 form entry primary school on a steeply sloping greenfield site. The completed building is 2,305m2 in area. Reception and Key Stage 1 classrooms are on the ground floor. Key Stage 2 classrooms are on the first floor. To bring natural light into the ground floor circulation we formed large voids in the first floor and enlarged the ground floor corridor into a mixed learning resource area.
There are outstanding outdoor facilities, including playing fields, multi-use sport courts, and modern outdoor play areas. Working with the landscape designers and structural engineers, we opted to situate the building and outdoor play areas on the same level and positioned the building to optimise the amount of cut and fill required to level the site. As a result, it was unnecessary to remove or import any material.
The project was handed over in July 2018, a month ahead of schedule, giving the school more time to prepare for the first pupil intake.
Restoring an iconic building, taking part in feasibility studies to decide the best use of the building, working on the project to turn it into a seven-screen cinema with restaurants, coffee shop and retail units, winning multiple industry awards and creating something of huge importance to local people.
