Building and infrastructure are hot topics, both in the UK and internationally. The UK Government has announced more than £460 billion of mixed public and private investment in infrastructure – 40% of funding will be from the public purse.
This new cashflow means projects which have been mothballed for years are now back on the cards alongside ambitious new schemes – in commercial, defence, health, rail, nuclear, flood defence, port and harbour development and large-scale urban regeneration.
To assist with the delivery of large programmes, Kier has a designated major projects team, bringing together sector leading experience to deliver complex buildings and infrastructure.

Kier Professional Services
Kier Professional Services, our engineering consultancy division, provides engineering designs, technical advice and support to Kier Group operating companies and other clients.
Kier's specialist engineering business assists project delivery in a safe and efficient manner and is behind many of the Group’s engineering successes, providing innovative solutions and often saving time, materials and money without compromising safety or quality.
The Luton DART project is a joint venture project between VolkerFitzpatrick and Kier (VFK). This new state-of-the-art guided mass passenger transit system will link the airport terminal building to Luton Airport Parkway station. Due to open in 2021 it will reduce journey time from the terminal to central London to under 30 minutes.
One of the largest infrastructure initiatives in the UK encompassing a new six-lane toll bridge over the River Mersey along with 9km of local road upgrades. Construction was carried out by Merseylink Civil Contractors, a joint venture between Kier Infrastructure, Samsung and FCC.
Cheshire’s first smart motorway from Crewe to Knutsford. Converting a 20 mile stretch of the M6 into an ‘all lane running’ smart motorway; creating much needed extra capacity and more reliable journey times. It will reduce delays and excessive congestion for the 120,000 (approx.) vehicles that use it each day.
Constructing two railway tunnels that run for 6.4km between the Royal Oak portal and the new Farringdon Crossrail station in Central London. Huge scale building of station tunnel caverns at Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road and Farringdon for the new Elizabeth line.
The A13 Road Widening Project is being delivered by Kier on behalf of Thurrock Council. The works include adding an additional lane in both directions between Orsett and Stanford-le-Hope and replacing four bridges. Due to open in autumn 2020, it will support economic growth, reduce congestion and enhance safety.
A joint venture with Kier Major Projects for the University of Northampton. The project marked the first time Kier had committed to a large-scale Light Gauge Steel (LGS) frame project and is the largest LGS project to date in the UK.
Working with Newlon Housing Trust, the project involves the demolition of the existing structure and the design and construction of a new residential development of 128 dwellings comprising 117 shared ownership flats,11 private sale flats plus 1 commercial unit to shell and core finish.
The new prison at Wellingborough will be an adult male Category C resettlement prison, designed to enhance rehabilitation. The project is embracing a Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) and integrating digital tools to drive efficiencies in the design, construction and operation of the facility.
