Bridges and Viaducts
Our specialist in-house engineering capabilities enable us to develop and implement detailed structural, mechanical and electrical solutions for a diverse range of structures including major pedestrian, cycle, road and rail bridges across the UK.
We have refurbished major bridges, including the award winning Chelsea Rail Bridge and Kingston River Bridge, along with some of the UK’s major swing bridges. Kier have a particular expertise in maintaining existing structures through assessment, repair and strengthening.
With specialist teams for signalling and power Kier has the expertise to offer clients the certainty of cost and certainty of delivery, however big or small a project. Clients also want to see us moving things forward in terms of innovation, safety, digitisation and making as much use of BIM as possible. From renewing signalling to extending power systems to allow stations to cater for longer trains we’re helping move rail forward.
Since 1997, our team of signalling specialists has developed a strong record of carrying out complex and technically challenging projects. We produce designs for all signalling disciplines and within Network Rail are recognised as experts in Relay Route Interlockings, Solid State Interlockings including CBI data design; and all types of mechanical interlockings (locking design and independent checking).
With Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE) licensed design and installation resources, our strength lies in design and installation of new technology in an older existing railway environment and our signalling engineering team is acknowledged as market leaders in this area. Projects we are currently involved with range from feasibility studies to full design and build programmes, valued from £15,000 to £15 million.
For many decades we have specialised in the installation and enhancement of power systems across the rail network. A leading design and construct provider of Electrification & Plant (E&P), High Voltage (HV) and associated power services for Network Rail, our high-performing CP5 Frameworks build upon many decades specialising in the installation and enhancement of power systems across the rail network.
Delivering a 100% BIM3 compliant utilities design at one of London’s busiest interchanges, Bank Station. Serving 73 million passengers annually, situated between London Bridge and the Bank of England.
Constructing two railway tunnels that run for 6.4km between the Royal Oak portal and the new Farringdon Crossrail station in Central London. Huge scale building of station tunnel caverns at Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road and Farringdon for the new Elizabeth line.
The Luton DART project is a joint venture project between VolkerFitzpatrick and Kier (VFK). This new state-of-the-art guided mass passenger transit system will link the airport terminal building to Luton Airport Parkway station. Due to open in 2021 it will reduce journey time from central London to under 30 minutes.
Working with Network Rail to keep the line between Ipswich and Lowestoft up and running. Replacing the line's Radio Electronic Token Block (RETB) system after the frequencies were allocated to the MOD, coming up with a workable solution with the client and ensuring this vital rural connection remained in service.
A high profile 3km route clearance of 1500 utility conflicts through Edinburgh city centre, delivered within budget and achieving all programme milestones, whilst minimising disruption to local businesses and residents.
Supporting the power requirement for ongoing Brighton Main Line signalling renewal works. We installed a Westplex System in order to upgrade a key commuter line to increase the quantity of trains able to utilise the line.
