Welcome to the project page for the Winterstoke Hundred Academy Expansion.

Project details
Kier are delighted to be designing and building the expansion to Winterstoke Hundred Academy.
Procured through the Southern Construction Framework, Kier appointed design team of AHR and Hydrock will deliver the new secondary school at Locking Parklands.
The school expansion, funded by Homes England’s Housing Infrastructure Fund, will provide 900 secondary school places so that more young people can access schooling in North Somerset. The new secondary school site will also have associated sports hall and pitches, alongside external social and learning spaces.
Project cost: £29m
Expected completion date: 2023
Sustainably built
The school syllabus specialises in environmental science and climate change. The school will support this aspiration by being an example of best practice in environmental design and energy efficiency.
In addition to this, North Somerset Council has a commitment to make North Somerset carbon neutral by 2030. The School is designed to achieve Net Zero Carbon in operation and an “Excellent” BREEAM certification. A biodiversity net gain of 10% through a combination of on-site and off-site compensation is also being sought.

Sustainability lab
An exciting part of the wider project is the introduction of the on-site Sustainability Lab. This will be a ‘hub’ with outdoor space, situated next to the main school. This space will support on-site vocational training throughout the length of the scheme, providing educational opportunities in construction and environmental practice.
The lab seeks to provide work experience, direct employment, carbon skills training and engagement with local businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises. Students of Winterstoke Hundred Academy will be involved with designing internal ‘eco’ features for the lab. Surrounding schools will have the opportunity to engage in onsite activity in the lab once it’s fully functioning. The lab will continue to benefit the community as a usable facility once Kier have handed the project over.
