Experience of regulated and challenging settings
The UK Armed Forces and wider defence sector have a worldwide reputation for professionalism. So, it is only right that the same rigorous standards are applied by Kier while working on the MoD’s Estate and within the wider Defence industry.
We have substantial experience of delivering major build and refurbishment projects to the MoD, defence agencies and contractors in support of the UK’s defence and security. Our dedicated teams and supply chain have vast experience of working in these highly regulated and demanding operational establishments - in naval bases on the Clyde and Portsmouth, air stations across the UK, in facilities supporting UK land forces, at laboratories and research sites and for defence manufacturers and suppliers.
Operating in critical environments
We often carry out major projects while facilities continue to operate, putting in place special arrangements to maintain security these include dedicated entrances for contractors and physical screening to minimise the impact of our work on core activities at a site. We include for such measures from the start so that projects remain on budget and on time, taking into account special requirements for secure and sensitive areas. As a trusted and long-term partner, we also understand the importance of agility and flexibility in defence projects, for example when operational plans alter, sometimes at short notice.
Supporting our forces
We recognise the significant part industry plays in supporting our Nation’s Armed Forces community. We were one of the very first companies to sign the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant in 2013, recognising the importance the construction and services sector plays in supporting the nation’s service personnel and their families throughout their lives.
In 2016 we were awarded a Gold Award in the prestigious Defence Employer Recognition Scheme from the Ministry of Defence for the support we have provided to the armed forces. We collaborate with the Armed Forces Career Transition Partnership to offer a recognised and accelerated route into our industry for service leavers, offering apprenticeships and graduate schemes on gas safety courses.
