A brand-new health and wellbeing centre has opened in the South Wales town dubbed the ‘birthplace of the NHS’.

Officially opened by Jeremy Miles MS, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, at a plaque unveiling event, The Bevan Health and Wellbeing Centre marks a significant milestone for Tredegar.

Kier has transformed the site where locally-born NHS-founder Aneurin Bevan was inspired to create the National Health Service in 1948, into a modern and purpose-built space to treat residents of Tredegar.

Bringing together a number of health services under one roof, the centre includes two GP practices, dental services, a prescribing pharmacy, and outpatient clinics.

As well as new and updated facilities, the project also preserved part of the original Tredegar General Hospital which was built in 1904. This area, affectionately known as ‘the heart building’, now serves as a waiting area for patients while also ensuring that a connection is retained with Aneurin Bevan’s legacy in the town.

The centre has already been recognised by a number of industry awards, including the 2025 IHEEM Wales Regional Conference, where it was ‘highly commended’ in the Capital Project of the Year category. It also won at the 2025 Healthcare Design Awards, being selected for ‘best primary care design’.

Ian Rees, regional director of Kier Construction Western & Wales, said:

"This project officially opening is a proud moment for Kier and it has been fantastic to see the Centre supporting the community’s healthcare needs and benefitting local patients.

It was important that we retained some of the existing building, and we are proud of what we have achieved in preserving Aneurin Bevan’s legacy here in Tredegar.

The centre represents the future of healthcare in Wales and it’s the kind of transformative project we are proud to deliver."

Nicola Prygodzicz, chief executive of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, said:

"We are delighted to officially open The Bevan Health and Wellbeing Centre, a facility that reflects our vision for the future of healthcare in Gwent. This Centre is more than just a building, it’s a hub for integrated care, designed to support people in the local communities live healthier, more connected lives.

Our teams have worked incredibly hard to create a space that promotes wellbeing in every sense, from the services it offers to the environment it provides. We are proud of what we’ve achieved and grateful to all our partners who helped make this vision a reality."

Kier procured the project under the Building for Wales framework. Kier has also recently completed the Satellite Radiotherapy Unit at Nevill Hall, Abergavenny and the 19 Hill Health & Wellbeing Centre in Newport for the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
