Kier, a leading UK infrastructure services and construction group, has been appointed by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to lead the design of improvements to Heaton Park Metrolink stop in Prestwich, Greater Manchester.

The scheme, which is being delivered as part of the Metrolink Stop Improvements Programme, will make the stop more accessible and enhance the customer experience.

Kier will lead on the design of the project, which includes enhanced step-free access through the installation of ramps and larger lifts. Proposed improvements also include:

  • Demolition and construction of new stepped access to platforms

  • Installation of new waiting shelters

  • Urban realm improvements at the stop entrance

  • Removal and relocation of existing platform furniture

  • Replacement of all signage including wayfinding

  • Installation of new pedestrian track crossing

  • Drainage works

Together, these proposed changes will create a more modern, accessible and welcoming facility for local residents and those visiting Heaton Park for leisure.

Situated on the Bury line, the stop serves the largest park in Greater Manchester with more than 600 acres of parkland, and is frequently used for both small and large-scale events.

Ian Davies, TfGM’s network director for Metrolink, said:

Heaton Park is a key stop on Greater Manchester’s tram network, serving local residents and visitors to one of the city-region’s most popular leisure destinations. These upgrades will help create a more modern, welcoming and accessible facility for the people who use it.

"Accessibility is a key priority for us and we will be making changes to the stop enabling easier access for passengers with mobility issues, people with pushchairs and those travelling with heavy luggage.

"The work at Heaton Park forms part of a wider programme to improve stops across our network, creating a more comfortable, accessible and convenient experience for people travelling by tram in Greater Manchester."

Mandy Duncan, managing director for Rail and Aviation at Kier Infrastructure said:

We’re delighted to have been appointed to develop the design of this scheme, which will enhance accessibility and improve the overall experience for passengers using Heaton Park Metrolink stop. We look forward to working in close partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester and partners.

"This appointment builds on the other projects we are currently delivering across Greater Manchester, including wider accessibility improvements at six railway stations and engineering upgrades near Manchester Victoria."
