Kier, a leading infrastructure and services group, has broadened the work it is delivering at Sizewell C, one of the UK’s most significant energy projects.
Through Sizewell C’s Major Civils Framework, the Group has been awarded a major contract to deliver the Sizewell Link Road. This project will provide a vital access route to the power station, which is key to the Government’s £725bn 10-year Infrastructure Strategy.
The 6.8km road will connect the A12 to the construction site. It will become the primary route for construction site traffic, minimising disruption for residents by reducing heavy goods vehicle movement through local communities, while helping to improve connectivity and journey times for local road users.
Utilising the Group’s extensive highways experience on national and regional roads, it will design and construct infrastructure, including earthworks, drainage, service ducts, surfacing, structures, as well as providing traffic management and interface planning services.
Craig Small, managing director for Nuclear & Energy at Kier Infrastructure, said:
This appointment builds on our growing role at Sizewell C, one of the country’s most important energy projects. The Sizewell Link Road is a vital component of the project’s delivery, providing road improvements which will both support construction and improve local transport links. Drawing on our expertise of delivering complex major infrastructure programmes, we will work closely with Sizewell C to deliver this efficiently and sustainably, while generating added benefits for local communities by bringing employment opportunities and investment in the regional supply chain, leaving a legacy that extends beyond construction.
Damian Leydon, Site Delivery Director at Sizewell C, said:
The Sizewell Link Road is a vital part of both building and operating Sizewell C. By providing a dedicated route between the A12 and our site, it will help reduce congestion on local rural roads, minimise construction traffic through nearby villages, and improve connectivity for residents, businesses and visitors across the area. Kier continues to be a valued partner of ours, and we look forward to building on that successful relationship as we deliver this important project together.
Supporting Sizewell C’s commitment to delivering long-term economic, environmental and community benefits, Kier will help contribute to the project’s ambition of directing 70% of construction value to UK businesses.
The new £38bn nuclear power project will employ almost 8,000 people on site during peak construction and, once operational, will generate 3.2GW of low-carbon electricity, enough to supply around six million homes while reducing carbon emissions by an estimated nine million tonnes annually.
This appointment builds on Kier’s longstanding involvement in the UK’s nuclear sector, where it has supported major programmes across new-build, decommissioning and operational facility upgrades. With proven capability in delivering complex, high-security infrastructure within highly regulated environments, most recently, Kier has been appointed to deliver the main entrance works at Sizewell C. In addition to this, Kier remains a vital contributor to the UK's energy and defence resilience, delivering works at Hinkley Point C, Sellafield and Devonport Royal Dockyard.
