The Challenge:

The scope of the works comprised the design, refurbishment and remodelling of the basement and lower ground floor of the City’s Central Library (originally used for storage), to create a light and airy primary school. Through the conservation of the lower floors, the library on the upper floor remained operational throughout our construction works, so the sensitivity about noise and disruption had to be carefully managed.

With the city-centre location of this site, we were faced with multiple logistical challenges. Before the project started the biggest fear for the operational schools bounding our site was the risk of a child getting hit by a delivery vehicle.

Through a carefully considered traffic management plan and daily meetings with the schools, we managed the process through a ‘just in time’ method, with any major deliveries programmed before 8am or after 4pm.

The Solution:

The new school will develop Cathedral Choristers and support a world class choir in Bristol. Students come from a range of backgrounds but all aspire to make the most of their talents especially in music, art, dance, sport and drama.

Our Project Manager established a close relationship with both schools and was commended by them for his close attention to this potential safety hazard.

As part of our collaborative design review and risk management process, we identified potential noise concerns in the main hall and circulation areas of the new school, with the specified hard surfaces and consistent foot traffic from the central library above.

The Impact:

Ensuring sufficient natural light into the basement classrooms was a key project challenge. Following research and review, we identified a company in Sweden that was manufacturing high-performance fibre-optic light systems.

We worked closely with their UK specialist and developed a system that would support the transfer of natural light from the roof, through 4-storeys to the basement. This system is able to capture natural light that is then transferred through fibre-optic cable to the classrooms at the flick of a switch.

" The site team was a credit to Kier. Nothing was ever too much trouble. An all-round excellent performance and a superb end-product. "
