
The Challenge:
The project involved creating a new technical campus, situated on a former Ministry of Defence site and was originally an RAF training station first opened in 1937.
Installing an extensive structure within the existing hangar was a major project challenge. We engaged with an acoustician to develop a number of innovative acoustic solutions to provide a good working environment within the large open plan atriums and offices. Key to the client’s architectural vision was to maintain the open spaces and views of the existing concrete roof structure which prevented a traditional baffle or ceiling solution to control reverberation.
The final solution was an innovative tensile fabric that achieved the client’s aesthetic aspirations for the space and effectively controlled the acoustic environment.
During the project, the client undertook other projects on the same airfield site. This has required Kier to proactively engage with other contractors and suppliers to ensure our activities do not affect their works.

The Solution:
The existing roof and walls were all suffering from spalling concrete due to carbonisation which has exposed the original reinforcement. We used hydro-demolition techniques to remove the spalling concrete to expose and clean the existing reinforcement prior to patch repairing the concrete. Once repaired, the concrete surface has a levelling mortar applied which in turn is finished with an elastomeric anti-carbonisation coating.
The bitumen roof covering was removed and a new high-performance felt system applied with significant fall arrest/rope access systems to support the workforce on the steep radius.
All existing windows were replaced with double glazing in keeping with the original style.
The heritage of the building was maintained by removing the 6 hangar doors per gable end and renovating 4 of them to their former glory. They were then reinstalled and separated by full height curtain walling to bring in more natural light.

The Impact:
This landmark project heralds the rebirth of a historical building. The heritage of the World War II hangar has been preserved but now houses state-of-the-art systems and provides a new home for innovative research, updated for the modern world.

Iffley Academy

The new academy replaces unfit for purpose old buildings, adding animal care, horticulture and construction facilities, a mock flat and pupil-run café.
Whitelands Academy, Kingsmere
A brand new 600 pupil secondary academy school for years 7-11, built to support Kingsmere, a new housing development in south-west Bicester. Constructed to BREEAM principles, the academy features 26-classrooms, SEN provision, a four-court sports hall built and fitted to Sport England standard, external social spaces and multi-use games areas.
Clearwater Primary Academy
A ‘Forever Home’ for a nomadic Primary School which originally operated from dilapidated portacabins and then moved to occupy converted offices with no playground. The new Academy is a spacious home to 67 pupils but allows for 420-student capacity as the new housing developments in the area become occupied.
