On 12 December, Transport for London requested an emergency road closure on the Northbound A2 between Danson off-slip to Westhorne on-slip, to rectify a dangerously failing 600sqm patch of carriageway. The section was part of our A102-2 block lane closures, however the patch’s position in lane 2 prevented correct safety zones - a well known drawback to the block lane closure methodology.
With a full closure unavoidable, we were determined to make the shift productive for ourselves, our client, the public and the boroughs of Bexley and Greenwich. We identified over 30 defects and several pieces of cyclic work in the section, most of which were inaccessible without a full road closure in place. At short notice we drafted in supply chain partners ELM, WJ and Flowline to complete surfacing, lining, studding and drainage works alongside our operatives under Blue Arrow’s traffic management. The night was a perfect example of collaboration across the whole chain, not only between ourselves and our supply chain, but also internally between our East and West
Maintenance Day (Jimmy Deeprose, Dan Dance) and Night (Lewis Bates, Wesley Elmore) Supervisors, who worked seamlessly to provide resource, plant and materials, and our LoHAC and Surrey contract staff who ensured stats plans were calculated for the crews.
TfL ensured the night went ahead smoothly, identifying works for a separate contract struggling to gain access and monitoring traffic flow - a concern during full closures but which proved fine in the event.
The night’s success proved full closures are the future for 2019’s programme when compared to the traditional block lane closure method:
•Better value for money for client and the public: approx. 90% more work completed on the night.
•Safer network for the public: defects accessed easier and quicker, reduced deterioration, more
efficient patching and less exposure during works.
•Less disruption for the public and surrounding boroughs: approx. 40% timescale reduction if applied across entire programme.
•Safer environment for our operatives: 100% near miss reduction experienced on the night.
•Enhanced learning opportunities: training experiences and ticketed qualifications in a sterile area if applied across entire programme.
•Improved collaborative opportunities: contractors, utilities and boroughs alike could benefit.

Our Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) iMRI project involved the construction of a three-storey building, adjacent to their existing theatres in the centre of their site, for a new iMRI suite and rehabilitation gym. The new MRI scanner was integrated into the new operating theatre to create a seamless brain imaging process during surgeries.
Hartsdown Academy is a secondary school with academy status located in Margate, Kent for circa 1000 students aged 11 to 18. The project was completed over two phases where phase one comprised of the demolition of two existing school buildings and the construction of a new three storey teaching block. Phase two involved the demolition of three existing school buildings and the installation of a new pre-fabricated modular building.
Spa School Camberwell is a co-educational special school for students aged 5 to 16 with autism. Construction works included the structural alteration, internal remodelling and fit out of a three storey Victorian building with a three storey new build extension. It has the capacity for 120 students and 80 staff.
Design and construction of an all through SEND school, funded by the Department for Education and managed by Orchard Hill College Academy Trust. The school specialises in autism and complex needs for up to 150 pupils aged 2–19 and offers a wide variety of special learning environments including sensory/calm spaces and emotional literacy support rooms.

56% of material was recycled when Kier resurfaced 5.5km of the A46 Warwick bypass dual carriageway. Leading the project on behalf of client National Highways, Kier worked with specialist supply chain partner Aggregate Industries and reduced the project’s carbon footprint by 23%.
