Liverpool City Council's challenge involved delivering a multi-million programme of works, across five projects.

The Solution:
Kier provided multidisciplinary design, project and cost management services on the programme of specialist centres for dementia and stroke patients and adults with learning difficulties and mental health issues.

The Impact:
A total of five projects were delivered simultaneously, involving a mixture of new build, refurbishment and working in occupied buildings.

Wexham Park Hospital Emergency Department and Assessment Centre
The design and build of a £36m emergency department and assessment centre, creating one of the most innovative care units in the NHS.
Greenwood Centre
Redevelopment of 25 & 37 Greenwood Place to provide a new 3,600m2 resource and community services centre run by people with disabilities, for people with disabilities. As part of Camden Council’s Community Investment Programme (CIP) it forms a hub for all services that was previously spread across the borough.
Mersey Gateway Project
One of the largest infrastructure initiatives in the UK encompassing a new six-lane toll bridge over the River Mersey along with 9km of local road upgrades. Construction was carried out by Merseylink Civil Contractors, a joint venture between Kier Infrastructure, Samsung and FCC.
M6 J16 to J19 smart motorway project
Cheshire’s first smart motorway from Crewe to Knutsford. Converting a 20 mile stretch of the M6 into an ‘all lane running’ smart motorway; creating much needed extra capacity and more reliable journey times. It will reduce delays and excessive congestion for the 120,000 (approx.) vehicles that use it each day.
St Julie’s Catholic High School
Building a new school for 1,100 students within the grounds of the original. Abiding by strict environmental regulations and generating a wealth of social value within the local community.
Gloucester Transport Hub
A unique and distinctive regeneration project promoting Gloucester’s unparalleled heritage from archaeology to aviation. The Hub is a highly symbolic part of the rejuvenation of the main entry point into the city, a gateway used in Roman times which is now served by both road and rail.
NHSBT Barnsley
Fit-out of a new, purpose-built development in Barnsley for use by NHS Blood and Transplant as a specialist research, storage, and logistics facility for the wider NHS, replacing facilities in Sheffield and Leeds to ensure efficiencies and improve services.
Reconnecting Cumbria on the A591
Clearing and repairing damaged sections of the A591 hit by storms in 2015/16, working with Cubby Construction on behalf of Highways England, operating in volatile conditions and completing the project three weeks early followed by a reopening ceremony performed by HRH Prince of Wales.
5 Pancras Square
One of the most sustainable mixed-use building in the country and winner of the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building award.
Pall Mall, Liverpool
Kier was selected by Liverpool City Council to deliver a new mixed commercial quarter known as Pall Mall, in partnership with CTP.
North Middlesex University Hospital
Our North Middlesex University Hospital (NMUH) project was a £53.6 million re-development comprising of 5 separate projects including units for Strokes, HIV, Women’s & Children’s Services, retained estates, infrastructure and external works. We treated each unit as an individual project with its own project team.
Storyhouse
Developing Chester's largest and most ambitious ever creative project, working in a restricted city centre location, adapting the programme when a Roman building was discovered on site, restoring and revitalising a Grade II Listed building, creating new cultural spaces and receiving the Arts Council's highest ever score for a building.
Chesterfield Borough Council partnership
Utilising assets and facilities management to enable Chesterfield Borough Council to generate significant annual rent to fund services.
Heron House
Refurbishment of a six-storey vibrant public building in Manchester City Centre, creating over £12.2m of social return on investment.

Creating a purpose-built facility for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and Perinatal Services. Providing support for adolescents, pregnant women, and women with a babies up to one year old who are experiencing mental health difficulties.
Rotherham Hospital Integrated Urgent Care Centre
Developing a new build Integrated Urgent Care Centre over two storeys at Rotherham Hospital, with refurbished and extended level B areas for new Fractures, Majors, Resuscitation and RAT departments.
Urenco Tails Manufacturing Facility
Kier worked as the main contractor to deliver a facility for processing ‘tails’, a by-product of the uranium enrichment process.

Working Roots
Setting up and running a project aimed at giving unemployed young people the opportunity to work on variety of projects at Kier North Tyneside, working with North Tyneside Council and Justice Prince ( a community interest company), and helping the young people learn new skills and grow in confidence.
Oldham Town Hall
Restoring an iconic building, taking part in feasibility studies to decide the best use of the building, working on the project to turn it into a seven-screen cinema with restaurants, coffee shop and retail units, winning multiple industry awards and creating something of huge importance to local people.
PET-MRI Facility, Royal Hallamshire Hospital
Construction and fit-out of a concrete-framed, two-storey PET-MRI facility at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, a joint project for the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Q Floor, Royal Hallamshire Hospital
Refurbishment of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital’s Q Floor from ward space into four new orthopaedic theatres, recovery area, staff changing, support stores and additional ancillary areas, located on the 14th floor of the hospital
Flintshire Adult Day Care Centre
Delivering new state-of-the-art community day care facilities and social care services for vulnerable adults with varying degrees of learning disabilities. The new facility in North Wales was the 1000th project procured through the Scape National Minor Works framework.
Piries Place Car Park
New carpark, with iconic 14.5m living wall, provides much-needed, modern spacious multi-level parking facilities, completing the regeneration of Piries Place, an historic area of Horsham in West Sussex. Delivered through the Scape National Minor Works framework, the new car park, provides 189 additional spaces.
Mersey Care ‘Rowan View’ Medium Secure Unit
Providing class-leading medium secure mental health facilities in Liverpool, this 123 bed mental illness and learning disabilities medium secure facility was procured through P21+. It is split across eight wards with supporting accommodation, on the Maghull Health Park.
Ambulatory Care and Acute Diagnostics Building, Heartlands Hospital
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust appointed Kier through the P22 Framework to deliver a brand-new centre to Heartlands Hospital. The exciting project will bring world-class facilities and house a wide range of health services, caring for circa half-a-million patients each year.
Atherleigh Park Mental Health Unit
Atherleigh Park has set the standard for the design of adult inpatient mental health accommodation, providing a healthy, therapeutic environment for residents that promotes their physical and mental wellbeing.

Converting the University of West England conference centre into a temporary hospital in just 20 days, providing increased capacity for the NHS following the outbreak of COVID-19.
Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) Khoo Teck Puat iMRI Suite
Our Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) iMRI project involved the construction of a three-storey building, adjacent to their existing theatres in the centre of their site, for a new iMRI suite and rehabilitation gym. The new MRI scanner was integrated into the new operating theatre to create a seamless brain imaging process during surgeries.
