The growth in popularity of Southend Airport had seen the existing facilities utilised to capacity. To keep up with demand, owners Stobart Group wanted to increase passenger capacity from 750,000 to approximately 3,000,000 per annum, requiring a major extension to the existing terminal building and surrounding infrastructure.
Construction would need to take place in a live environment, allowing the airport to continue operations. There was also a requirement for the new facility to achieve a BREEAM Excellent sustainability rating.
The projected included the design and build of an extension to the existing airport passenger terminal including freestanding landside and airside passenger walkways, as well as hard and soft landscaping. Enhancements were made to the airport’s baggage handling facilities and security screening areas to accommodate increased passenger numbers.
The airport remained fully operational throughout the project as works were carefully phased to ensure minimal disruption to the live environment, with all project milestones being achieved.
The extension to Southend airport has significantly increased the number of passengers able to travel through the facility. A BREEAM ‘Excellent’ status was awarded, with sustainability features being utilised including the incorporation of PV panels to the roof, a rainwater harvesting tank for the use of “grey” water and LED light fittings in the main concourse areas.
The Luton DART project is a joint venture project between VolkerFitzpatrick and Kier (VFK). This new state-of-the-art guided mass passenger transit system will link the airport terminal building to Luton Airport Parkway station. Due to open in 2021 it will reduce journey time from the terminal to central London to under 30 minutes.
