The Challenge:

Procured through Frameworks Scotland 2, the Surgical Centre will provide a range of first-class facilities, including theatre suites, a surgical admissions and recovery unit (SARU), a surgical administration space, central sterilising and processing department facilities, endoscopy unit, orthopaedic amenities, outpatient and pre-operative spaces, as well as staff wellbeing spaces.

When complete, this building will support the hospital to provide over 9,400 new outpatient consultations, more than 4,400 pre-operative assessments and over 13,900 other procedures.

The Solution:

Kier is using modern methods of construction (MMC) throughout the build, including a hybrid pre-cast concrete frame, the envelope of the building will be pre-cast with windows and brickwork completed off site.

Sustainability is also at the heart of this project and the Golden Jubilee site is trialling the latest innovation to come out of Sunbelt Limited in partnership with Crown Oil Limited which is Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). HVO fuel could save the site’s CO2 emissions by up to net 90%, NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) emissions by up to 27% and PM (particulate matter) by up to 84%, all key components in achieving improved air quality compared to red diesel.

It’s manufactured from 100% renewable and sustainable waste, all ethically sourced and derived from raw materials. HVO is a ‘drop in’ fuel that can replace diesel with no changes required to the engine or operational infrastructure. The fuel is also cleaner than diesel requiring less maintenance and potentially extending plant life. It is legal for road and non-road use and offers significant reductions in noxious tail pipe emissions. It won’t freeze and has a shelf life of 10 years.

Currently HVO fuel costs approximately 82p/litre which is more expensive than red diesel at approximately 77p/litre. However, the UK Government is currently consulting on a red diesel tax reform which would align with their net zero targets by 2050. Therefore, the cost of red diesel is set to increase in the near future whilst we will see HVO fuel decrease as it becomes more widely used. Being ahead of the curve ensures Kier Group future proofs our business.

The HVO fuel was delivered onto the Golden Jubilee on week commencing 17 May 2021 and will be used on their 14m Telehandler and three articulated MEWP’s.

The Impact:

When complete, this building will support the hospital to provide over 9,400 new outpatient consultations, more than 4,400 pre-operative assessments and over 13,900 other procedures.
