The Challenge:
Kier took a high-cost and under-utilised venue nearing the end of its lifespan and created Sheffield North Active, a new build leisure centre with additional health consultation rooms, at Thorncliffe Recreation Ground in High Green, Sheffield.
The scheme also had to comply with Sport England guidance and Thorncliffe Sports Community Development Group’s concerns over the building having a negative impact on existing playing fields and courts in the area. There were also concerns over congestion in the area.

The Solution:
Maintaining excellent relationships with project managers, T&T and Sheffield Council throughout, the team was able to produce a high quality facilitiy within a strict time line. This included a 25m six-lane swimming pool, a gym with 40 exercise stations, a dance and exercise studio and six health consultation rooms.
To meet guidelines and concerns the design minimised the use of playing fields. In addition, potential congestion in the surrounding residential areas was avoided by using disused land belonging to the nearby Paces Centre for parking. , which resulted in additional works on the FA Pavilion, involving the team working in advance with Sheffield City Council contractors on this build.

The Impact:
What was a high cost and under-utilised facility has now been transformed into an efficient and modern leisure destination. Its compact, efficient layout with a bold original façade design entices people into the facility. The new building also has reduced operating costs, which were offset by transferring the City Council subsidy from the new Chapeltown Pool. Sheffield North Active only costs the Council around 20% of Chapeltown Pool and North Active’s combined running costs due to the utilization of sustainable and energy efficient designs.
" The programme to completion was tight, but the building quality has been maintained and operator very happy with the building. "Sean McClean Interim Head of Service Sheffield City Council
