The education needs for the area, assessed by the Department for Education (DFE) was based on an urgent requirement to meet the increasing demand of a new primary school within the North Kent area. There was a need for the school due to additional residential properties being built in the Ebbsfleet Garden City.
The new coeducational primary school located north east of the Springhead Parkway Development is the eighth school to be added to The Primary First Trust portfolio, these also hosts and supports other infant and primary schools in the Kent area.
Kier were tasked with building a distinctive and striking modern design but this had to sit comfortably within the immediate residential setting and presenting an image that is welcoming and increases the sense of ownership hat the students, staff and community have for their school. Kier also had to make sure they developed connections with existing community facilities.
For Kier to provide the educational facilities for the immediate garden city, within the given time frame, the team proposed and delivered modular solution which not only met the local authority timeframes but exceeded the Trust’s expectations.
The modular design allowed the school to be built within a year of Kier’s mobilisation on site as well as the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. The design succeeded in meeting the requirements of the DfE’s design brief against the school teaching visions such empowerment to the students through sustainability – which Kier achieved through the modular design.
A key objective the client wanted was to make sure there were zoning of the classrooms to provide identity to each learning phase. This was designed in a logical layout reflecting the ‘learning journey’ from the foundation through to the Upper Phase with the older years being on the upper floor so there is a natural transition to the ‘top of the school’
The new school will be efficient to run and maintain and thus deliver respective savings in running and maintenance costs.
