The Challenge:
Through the ProCure Frameworks, which began in 2003, one of Kier's first projects was with West London NHS Trust to design and build a new Women's Enhanced Medium Secure Unit known as the Orchard. Since this project, we have developed a long term working relationship delivering a range of mental health services at St Bernard's Campus, Ealing and the major redevelopment of Broadmoor Hospital.
We have provided state of the art facilities across the mental health facilities spectrum including low, medium and high secure, Children & Young People, Community and Older Adults through new, refurbished or upgraded facilities to support West London NHS Trust. The trust is delivering the optimum care for their service users, carers and families.

The Solution:
Our solution was to partner with the Trust from the outset, understanding their end users to ensure that the solution was truly fit for purpose and enabled them to provide to exception care of the service users.
As part of our development for the new Male Medium Secure Unit, during design, we built one of the bedrooms to test the layout, furniture and Fittings to ensure that it met the Environmental Design Standards 2011. This approach ensured that any design issues were identified and addressed before we started on site, minimising any impact on cost and programme during construction.

The Impact:
Our portfolio with West London NHS Trust at St Bernard's Hospital is over £100m, we are continuing to work in partnership with the Trust to deliver unique solutions for the mental health sector.
Our latest project is to re-provide two older adult units known as Limes and Jubilee located at St Bernard's Campus, where we are also collaborating with the University of Stirling world renowned 'The DSDC - The Dementia Centre' creating fresh ideas, stimulating innovation and putting knowledge to work to improve the lives of people with dementia.
" We’re here at Thames Lodge on the St Bernard’s site, new 80 bed medium secure facility for men. It is a template of how medium secure units should look up and down the country, it will offer the service users much more privacy and dignity, opportunities for fresh air and supervised movement in the grounds, ensuring that they are risk assessed properly. "Leanne McGee Director of High Secure and Forensic Services West London Mental Health NHS Trust
