The building was developed on derelict land, with work beginning before Kirklees Council had fully handed the land over to Kirklees College, requiring additional licenses from the Council to allow the team to begin work.
The College also asked for the building to be re-priced to a new design, making changes such as the overall design of the ground floor, and moving the teaching area for motor vehicle courses into another smaller building on site.
The team also discovered an old well on the site; this required removal along with the foundations of the Safeway store which formerly stood on the site.
The team worked extremely closely with the College, working efficiently to find a solution which suited all parties. The redesign of the building was completed without additional cost to the client. Lean planning was used extensively, keeping all parties informed of developments, actions, and progress, contributing massively to the project’s success. The sequencing of operations was precisely planning with the meetings allowing the team to solve problems collectively.
The team also managed to reuse the old Safeway foundations, crushing the old concrete and using this in the vibro piling for the Springfield Centre, thereby reducing waste.
A culvert also runs across the site, and as a natural watercourse, required protection. When the existing car park was removed, reconstituted stone was used to cover the culvert at the new levels formed, rather than using limestone.
The Springfield Centre was successfully delivered in early 2018. Kirklees College were extremely happy with their new building, and praised the team for their hard work.
The Centre boasts ground floor classrooms, CGI studios, food technology areas, and a separate motor vehicle building.
