Circular economy in action

Blackburn Wastewater Treatment Plant treats over 168 million litres of sewage a year. We’re working for United Utilities to remove outdated equipment in preparation for new technology infrastructure to convert treated sewage bi-products into renewable green energy.

As part of the project, we were able to reuse circa 194,000 tonnes of materials on site, preventing waste and transforming into high quality resources – delivering environmental, social and logistical benefits for all. This helped avoid circa 1,700 tonnes of CO2e associated with off-site recycling and import of virgin materials and avoided circa 20,000 wagon movements in total.
