At Kier we believe that everyone deserves respect and set our 5 Expect Respect principles around this. We recognise that talking about diversity and inclusion can sometimes be outside of people’s comfort zone, so we’ve come up with an innovative way to embed these principles through our Expect Respect board game. This experience removes barriers and facilitates open, honest conversations about inclusion across Kier.

82%
of Kier colleagues rated Kier as an inclusive business in our FY26 YourVoice survey

I was recently trained to facilitate the Expect Respect boardgame and I've already been part of delivering the game to 50 operational managers in my part of the business. I've really enjoyed the experience of not only being trained as a facilitator but also being able to use that knowledge to support my peers and colleagues to learn more about our expectations around inclusion and belonging in Kier. We're planning a much bigger roll out of the game in the coming year, and I am looking forward to being a part of that journey

Our Expect Respect Boardgame

Our Expect Respect boardgame was first launched in FY23 to help educate our people about the importance of respect in the workplace. The interactive game allows a safe space for teams to engage in open, honest conversations and helps people better understand different perspectives, experiences and identities.

I really love the way our Expect Respect game encourages teams to discuss important inclusion topics in an open way. We normally allow 1.5hrs for the game and often have teams asking us if we can continue playing way beyond this. The great thing is it’s delivered by our people. We now have over 125 trainers throughout Kier who have all volunteered to become game facilitators.  It’s so popular, we have had to order 30 more games!

We have 125 facilitators for our Expect Respect board game sessions across Kier. The games are produced at Nordis Signs, our supported business which promotes and provides job opportunities to people with disabilities. The sessions have been positively received with participant feedback showing a 15% increase in confidence in talking about diversity and inclusion subjects and 9% increase in confidence calling out non-inclusive workplace behaviours after the session compared to beforehand.
