Our People

Our Approach to Sustainability Literacy

Across Kier, we are strengthening sustainability literacy through a growing mix of in-person training, online learning, webinars and role-specific development. We are corporate and training partners of the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP), and have brought environmental skills training in-house, with approval from ISEP, which we deliver to site-based and operational colleagues to support stronger environmental compliance, risk management and good practice on our projects.

Our emerging talent programmes include sustainability with apprentices, placement students and graduates taking part in a variety of learning. This explores climate, nature and social sustainability, including an ISEP approved in-person programme incorporating the UN Sustainable Development Goals, how sustainability supports work winning, and how individuals can take practical action in their roles.

We are expanding in-house sustainability learning for colleagues whose decisions shape projects before they reach site, including commercial, procurement, design, planning and bid teams. This learning focuses on the links between sustainability, including the interconnection between environmental and social sustainability, environmental compliance, client expectations, whole-life value and work winning, helping our people recognise risks and opportunities earlier and embed sustainable thinking into everyday decisions.

Partnerships and Learning Pathways

To support wider engagement, we provide online carbon learning, including e-learning modules approved by The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), monthly sustainability webinars and access to resources through our long-standing corporate membership of the Supply Chain Sustainability School (SCSS). The School is a key training partner for Kier, helping our employees and supply chain partners build knowledge on topics such as carbon, biodiversity, circular economy, social value, procurement and modern slavery. We promote relevant learning pathways, host selected e-learning on our internal learning management system, contribute to School leadership groups and collaborative projects, and are exploring ways to make its resources even more accessible for operational and site-based teams.

Volunteering Days

We also offer our people two paid volunteering days each year to support community, charitable and environmental causes. Volunteering helps us create a positive legacy in the places where we operate while giving colleagues the opportunity to learn by doing. By engaging directly with social and environmental challenges, our people develop greater sustainability awareness, strengthen practical skills and gain valuable insights that can be applied across our business. This active, hands-on approach supports sustainability literacy and empowers colleagues to make a positive difference both at work and in their communities .

By maturing sustainability literacy across our business, we are helping our people connect Kier’s sustainability ambitions with the decisions they make every day. This supports our Building for a Sustainable World framework, strengthens environmental and social performance, and encourages innovation as we continue our journey of sustainable growth.
